Insomnia Drawings
I did not sleep through he night since the birth of my second son in 2013 until the spring of 2020. In 2016, inspired by the Insomnia Drawings of Louise Bourgeois, I began making drawings by the light of my phone whenever I awoke in the middle of the night. Sometimes these drawings were made in direct response to news of current political events, or something I saw that day. At other times the drawings were the result purely intuitive half-awake mark making. I then photographed the drawings against the backdrop of my bed sheets using my phone’s camera. The flash of the camera creates a shadowy vignette that frames these drawings. I have made over 450 nocturnal drawings.
