Brush House

I have been obsessively photographing myself brushing my teeth with my children since 2016. This project began as I followed an impulse to share an honest, if mundane, glimpse into my life as a single mother and working artist. Over the years this project has evolved into an exploration of care outside of the nuclear family structure. As the work has shifted in this way, it has moved away from being a purely photographic project and has become a performance. I invite friends, family members, and colleagues to share few moments of intimacy as we brush together. During the early months of the pandemic, my household created weekly two-minute video "episodes" of our toothbrushing routines for Quaran.tv, a Baltimore based public access style streaming channel.
